Ellar Coltrane is the star of Richard Linklater’s new film, “Boyhood”. This film follows Ellar from age 5-18…..literally. 12 years in the making, with the same actor. The film will be released on July 18th.
Given the type of work that I shoot, I have to stay on top of unauthorized use of my images. When Michael was cast for the role of the Human Torch, I found this image popping up on a ton of blogs. I soon got to witness one of the more laughable results of the stupidity inherent in racism. It seems that comic book nerds…. ahem.. fans of the genre take issue with casting a black man into the role of a character that has a white twin sister. THE HORROR! Never mind that this is also a character that can combust at will, and fly…. that’s no problem at all… but a white sister??? That could never happen in real life!!! Cognitive dissonance is a mofo.
That said, Michael was a cool dude. Real down to earth, and very thankful to be where he is at.
Chaz Ebert~ Publisher, President of Ebert Productions, Devoted Wife of the Late Roger Ebert.
I met Chaz at Toronto Film Fest last year. We got to talking at a film reception whose name escapes me at the moment. I told her about the trip that I was planning, to spend some time with my grandfather, and why. I didn’t allude to the financial reasons for waiting to take the trip, but apparently, she just knew. Later that evening, she approached me, took my hand, and said: “Don’t say anything. Go see your grandfather.” She gave me a hug, and as she stepped away, she left some money to put toward the trip, in the palm of my hand. In a room full industry moguls, negotiating deals over sponsored gin and small bites, she took the time to extend an exceptional gesture of compassion. I’ll admit that it was no small effort to maintain composure, given the environment.
Last night, I attended the release of “Life Itself”. It is the documentary on the late Roger Ebert. Chaz was there (of course), and a seat in the theater was set aside in Roger’s memory.
I did not grow up in the “film” world… unless you litany of c rate horror flicks from the local Video Stop. The household names of “Siskel and Ebert” were the only indicators that Film Critic could even be a job title. I am new to this subset of the world, so I went to this film with little more than the knowledge that Roger was a film critic, whose life was taken by an illness that is affecting an increasing number of people that I know. On leaving the theater, I had been witness to the story of a passionate journalist, not lionized by intent, but by matter of fact. He was not painted as perfect, but shown to be genuine. The film also validates the anecdotes that I’ve been privy to about what a great pair Chaz and Roger were. Even if you aren’t a film buff, I’d recommend Life Itself.
Robert Patrick~ Actor. President of the Boozefighters MC
I photographed Robert Patrick along with the rest of the cast of the upcoming series “From Dusk Till Dawn”. He had his Boozefighers colors at the shoot. We got to talking about motorcycles for a bit after everyone left. It completely went over my head that he was THE TERMINATOR!!! He turned out to be a really cool dude.
